During my visit at Foxdale village I had a wonderful  interview with Mr. Donald Henderson. It was interesting to know how life was like in the fifties as at that time I was not yet born. We had a discussion on how life at the University was back then which gave me more knowledge. After the visit I also went to the Pattee and Paterno library to find more source related to Penn State campus in that period. I used written source book called “C’est la vie” and the “Collegiate” and focused my research in the period of the Second World War. I sought how the life at campus were shattered by the war period and how the students as well as the University lived through it.

Reading C’est la vie, I searched and found some information related to the war period. One of the topic was discussing on how the University had to contribute and help the country in that period. About three hundred of student had enrolled in the army (1939). After enrolment they had to go for training before going in Europe for war. Army exam were available at the campus and any student in age to serve his country were allowed to take the test.

In addition I look in “the daily collegian” review which was established in 1940 replacing free-lance and the collegiate and found interesting information stating how life at campus was transformed because of war. According to the daily collegiate mental exam for Army air force were available to students interested in air combat (1944). As the war period fueled almost any discussion, the journal was accused of concentrating too much of the attention to war (1941). Ralph Dorn Hertzel who was the School president at that time said that it was an undeniable fact and that public should face the interruption of normal activities as war could not be ignored.

Another situation that was discussed on by the Daily collegian was the debate concerning whether college should accept war wedding (1942). War wedding is a term that refer to marriage contracted just before the man or woman joins the army. This deeply showed how life at campus was completely transformed during that period.

After betraying his friend Amir felt guiltiness and was highly ashamed. Every moment he would see Hassan was more painful so he decided to give up their  friendship. It was the last time he saw Hassan as the war began,  Russia invaded Afghanistan and Amir and his father fled to the United states. For Amir it was a new life where he would forget the past, forget Hassan and think more about the future. His father did not adapt well even after the two years they passed in America.

Amir finally won the tournament he was so happy and everybody gave him congratulations. Yet he did not enjoy his victory as the evening Hassan was again attacked by Assef and his collegues, he chose not to help him for fear or simply cowardice.

"No monster " said Hassan to Amir encouraging him to fly the kite. On the tournaments day, Amir woke up nervous because of the competition. During the breakfast Hassan told him the dream he made about both of the them swimming in a lake that inhabited a monster. When the tournament almost started Amir was about to give up yet his friend told him there was no monster in the lake, referring to his dream and inferring that he should not have fear. To this word Amir regained courage and flew his kite. He asked himself if Hassan had not made up the dream.

As the Kite running competition  was close, it was the main subject during conversations; people were praising the event saying it would be the biggest in twenty-five years. The tournament was going to be held in their district. The night, four days before the tournament, Amir was sitting on the fireplace with his father, sipping tea and talking. Ali had served dinner and retired for the night with Hassan. Baba, Amir's father told him, " I think maybe you will win the tournament this year. What do you think ? " Amir was so amazed, he didn't know what to respond because it was rare his father show trust in him. He felt happy and  he knew that to be more close to his father and show him he was worthy, he had no other option but to win. He would began to envision the place they would go together if he won, his father would read him his favorite story and maybe, just maybe he would be pardoned for killing his mother.

I felt empathy for the little Amir as he thought that Baba held him responsible for the death of mother. Amir never new his mother because she died at his birth.

In Kabul there was an competition event  called Kite running. Amir and Hassan were preparing for the next own. Hassan was very good with Kite running, in contrast to Amir. Amir liked the event because, apart from competing with other student somehow it brought his father and him close. His father would comment on how him and Hassan were good at running kites than building them and he would take them to buy new ones.

The Korean war that happened in 1950, lasted for about three years. At the end of the war, the country found itself divided into two parts, North Korea and South Korea. Through years the two countries had dissents that has lessened their relationship. After the war families were separated as a member would find himself in South when his relatives would be in the Northern country. For years they weren't allow any communication but few due to hard rapport between the countries.

On February 20, the two parties had an agreement, allowing the reunion of families that were separated after the war. According to Euronew's articles the reunion event took place in Mount Kumgang, just north of the border. The second and third sources provide more information on the place of meeting that occurred in Diamond's resort hotel. According to CNN article on the first day about 200 members of families met. Euronews did not mention the number of people that attended, MSN article’s only give the number of North Korean expected which is not precise. Most of  members were elderly as they last saw their famillies 60 years ago. The second article contains more information and details, it provides interview of a North Korean who was held captive after the war in South Korea and the hope he kept to see his family again.

The second article provides new and precise information than the others, conversely Euronews source give less information. All the articles are professional, they are written to provide information on the event.
